Shows to binge watch if you loved : Downton Abbey

Mercy Street

PBS’s original series is based on the writings of nurses and doctors who worked inside Mansion House Hospital in Alexandria, Virginia during the Civil War. It chronicles the lives and work of two nurses: Mary Phinney (Mary Elizabeth Winstead), a New England abolitionist and widow, and Emma Green (Hannah James), whose family home is turned into a Union-run hospital during the war.

Mr. Selfridge

Where did iconic British department store Selfridges get its start? With American entrepreneur Harry Gordon Selfridge (Jeremy Piven), who sets out to transform the “dead end” of London’s Oxford Street into a mecca of fashion and luxury.

Upstairs, Downstairs

Before Downton, there was Upstairs, Downstairs. Originally on the air from 1971 to 1975, it was the first series to explore the class distinctions between the wealthy family “upstairs” and their servants “downstairs.” The original series followed the Bellamy family who lived in a posh London townhouse and their servants. Like Downton, events like the First World War, the sinking of the Titanic, and early 20th century politics were explored

A Place to Call Home

After World War II, nurse Sarah Adams returns to her hometown in New South Wales after 20 years spent in Europe. She begins working in a hospital, much to the dismay of Elizabeth Bligh, a wealthy matriarch.

War and Peace

Based on Leo Tolstoy’s epic novel, this six-part series follows three young Russians (Paul Dano, Lily James and James Norton) as their lives are changed forever by Napoleon’s invasion of Russia. As Napoleon Bonaparte’s conflict with Russia reaches its peak, a few members of five aristocratic families foresee their lives changing for the better.
